On Oct. 11th 2010, University of Birmingham held the Degree-Issuing Ceremony of traditional Britain for President Jianguo Hou of University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and granted Doctor of Science honoris causa to him.
President David Eastwood of University of Birmingham presided over the ceremony, as well as some colleagues from University of Birmingham, including the Vice President Malcolm Press, Prof. Susan Hunston (Dean of School of English, Drama and American & Canadian Studies), Prof. KK Cheng (life science), Prof. Xin Yao (computer science), Edward Harcourt (Head of International Relations) of University of Birmingham. And the Vice President of USTC Shulin Zhang attended the ceremony.
President David Eastwood said, President Hou had made a series outstanding achievements as a famous physical chemist and a president of the Top University in China, who also had played an important role in promoting the academic collaboration and exchanging for scholars and students. As President Eastwood described, the Doctor of Science honoris causa in University of Birmingham was regarded as the top honor in British Universities for the famous people all over the world. Hitherto, President Hou is the first Chinese scholar who wins this honor.
University of Birmingham, with a history of more than 100 years, is the TOP-10 Research University located in Birmingham, the second biggest city of UK. It has come up two Prime Ministers of UK and 8 Nobel Prize Laureates. Our famous Chinese geologist Siguang Li ( ) and the first Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HK SAR), Tung Chee Hwa ( ), are both the alumni of University of Birmingham.
