On June 20, 2007, a cooperative agreement was singed between Tianjin University (TU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), USA. Vice president, Professor Hu Xiaotang, met the delegation from the CWRU headed by Professor Norman C. Tien and conferred on him Honorary Professor of Tianjin University on behalf of President Gong Ke.
Then, on behalf of their respective universities, Professor Hu and Professor Tien signed the Cooperative Agreement on Engineering Graduate Education. The Dean of the School of Precision Instrument and Opto-Electronics Engineering, Professor XU Kexin Director of the International Cooperation Office, Professor YANG Fuling also attended the ceremony.
Vice President Hu expressed his warm welcome to the guests. He pointed out that the founding of Tianjin university could be seen as a model of international cooperation. Now Tianjin University still attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchange. He hopes that the two universities would form all-around interuniversity cooperation to promote common development from now.
Professor Tien extended his gratitude for the honor and hospitality given by TU and indicated that he will do his utmost to promote the academic cooperation and exchange between two universities. After the ceremony, Professor Tien discussed on specific cooperation opportunities with professors from the School of Precision Instrument and Opto-Electronics Engineering, the School of Management as well as the School of Materials Science and Engineering.
Later, Professor Tien visited the Feng Jicai institute of Literature and Arts, the school of Civil Engineer, and gave a lecture about CWRU and its Case School of Engineering. The history of CWRU can be traced back to 1826. It is now situated in Cleveland, Ohio and is one of the leading independent, research-oriented universities in USA.
According to US News and World Report 2007, CWRU ranks 38 among national universities in USA. Professor Tien s research interests are in the area of micro and nanotechnology, including micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). He is now the Dean and Nord Professor of Engineering at CWRU s Case School of Engineering and also the Ohio Eminent Scholar in Condensed Matter Physics.
He is also the son of Chang-Lin Tien, an internationally well known engineering scholar and educator, former Chancellor of UC Berkeley.
