Taiwan's agricultural exports grew by 19.3 percent in the first half of this year to US$1.87 billion, another sign of the country's recovery from the economic slump, according to statistics released Thursday by the Council of Agriculture.
Eels, groupers, butterfly orchids, dancing lady orchids, mangoes and lettuces were among the leading 29 items, fetching a combined total of US$267.1 million and representing a 22.6 percent growth.
Japan is the largest market for Taiwanese agricultural produce, accounting for 22.4 percent of all exports, followed by China at 12.4 percent, Hong Kong at 11.9 percent and the United States at 10.5 percent.
Exports to China stood at US$231.88 million, representing a growth of 36.4 percent over the corresponding period of last year, thanks to the launch of direct flight services between Taiwan and China.
Notable among those exports are custard apples and live groupers, with combined value of US$26.78 million, or 61.1 percent more than the corresponding period of the previous year.
Among fishery products, tuna led the pack with exports of US$277.64 million, followed by eels at US$74.67 million, tilapia at US$35.99 million and groupers at US$20 million.
