Severe cold has destroyed the standing tomato crop in Jharkhand's Ranchi District."We are helpless as we are not getting the correct price for our tomatoes. We have invested huge money in irrigation through diesel but we are not getting any profit out of it," said Ramsharan Kumar, a farmer. Small-scale farmers also complained of poor returns for their crop.
"We are getting merely four to five rupees per kilogram for the tomatoes. We have invested money for better production but getting nothing in return for our investment," said Geeta. Crop damage has remained a worrisome issue for India as the country has mainly an agrarian economy. Farmers in other parts of the country also fretted over crop damage due to the cold.
