After an aura of panic was observed following the outbreak of a vine disease, Pseudomonas syringae pv actinidiae (Psa), the harvesters have now decided to cut down and bury the kiwifruit vines within the area of nearly 15 hectares. First discovered at the Te Puke orchard November 2010, Psa leads to dark spots on leaves, red-rusty exudation which covers bark tissues on trunks and twigs, fruit collapse and eventually plant mortality. Although, the Government has decided to compensate for the losses of cultivators, many were still grieving as they saw their hard-work wither and cut back to the root stock.
John Burke, CEO of Kiwifruit Vines Health, said that although the condition is not as serious as it seems since the disease is not much virulent in this season, but the Government is hell bent to take all the precautionary measures against the infection.
