Workers may have caused a heating pipe to explode at the Sidaokou intersection in Haidian district on the morning of March 16, Zhang Jiaming, chief of Beijing Administration of Work Safety, said on a radio program Wednesday.
The blast happened near the construction site of subway Lines 6 and 9, and injured seven people.
Workers were conducting final inspections on heating pipes before turning off the city's public heating supply for the winter when the accident occurred, and anyone responsible would be severely punished, said Zhang, adding that they are still investigating to determine whether the pipes exploded due to age.
