Police will launch surprise inspections of weapons and ammunition storage units at shooting ranges to ensure the safety of the 3,000 guns in the city, authorities said Thursday.

Authorities discussed how to enforce a new regulation for competition and sports guns Thursday morning at a meeting between the Public Order Corps of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and the Municipal Bureau of Sports, according to the Legal Mirror.

The new regulation, issued by the Ministry of Public Security and the General Administration of Sport, was put into effect on January 1.

Managers of shooting-sports facilities will be punished if they fail to report to higher-level authorities or attempt to cover up situations in which their guns are stolen or lost.

Beijing police will check the facilities' qualifications to provide shooting sports activities, whether or not the guns meet safety standards and whether the storage, use and management of the guns are safe, reported the Legal Mirror.

The regulation also requires weapons and ammunition to be stored in separate rooms. The facilities should have anti-theft alarm systems and people should be assigned to be on guard around the clock.

Guns at sports facilities should not be loaned or given away as presents, or taken out of the facilities without approval, says the regulation.
