This Saturday, taxis will begin charging a fuel surcharge of 2 yuan ($0.31) for all trips longer than 3 kilometers, doubling the current surcharge of 1 yuan. There is still no fuel surcharge when the distance traveled is less than 3 kilometers, according to qianlong.com.

The municipal government approved the increased surcharge, which first appeared in November 2009 after fuel prices rose to 7.1 yuan per liter.
As of Thursday, the price of No.93 fuel had risen to 7.85 yuan per liter.

To offset the increased burden on the local taxi industry, the government will continue to pay fuel subsidies to taxi drivers and correspondingly adjust the fuel surcharges to keep taxis operating normally.
