May and June again herald the citywide annual examination of pet dogs, authorities confirmed Monday.
Beijing police reminded residents on Sunday to have their dogs examined and registered, and encouraged that pet dogs be spayed and neutered, the Beijing Daily reported Monday.
Foreign dog owners should present passports and dog permits from their landlords or local residents' committees to their local police stations for examination and registration, an officer surnamed Xiang with the dog examination and detention center under the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau told the Global Times Monday.
"Foreigners can also adopt dogs from us," Xiang said. "But they have to follow local policies as well." The center has about 100 dogs available for free adoption at present.
Information on the website for the International Center for Veterinary Services in Beijing also advises that dog owners bring their dogs, ID photos of their dogs and a copy of their leases to the police department for registration. Only one dog may be registered per household within the Fifth Ring Road, according to the site.
Those who registered last year should bring their documents to local police stations and pay the registration fee, the Beijing Daily reported.
It costs 1,000 yuan ($153.06) to register a dog the first time. Some large residential compounds charge 500 yuan per dog per year after that, while it is less than 100 yuan in other suburban areas. Appointed veterinary clinics will provide examination services and vaccinate the dogs for free against rabies, according to Xiang.
Starting July 1, for two weeks police will check dog registrations and examination results, the Beijing Daily reported. Owners who do not comply with the regulations face punishments ranging from a warning to confiscation of the dog, Xiang said.
"We will diligently provide services for pet dog owners from May 1 to June 30," said Xiang, adding that processing dog registrations is not limited to those two months.
