Deputy Commissioner Zhang Weimin Meets with the Professor. Lepkowski from the University of Michigan

On the afternoon of 9 August 2006, Mr. Zhang Weimin, Deputy Commissioner of the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS) met with the visiting American Professor, Mr. James M. Lepkowski from the Institute for Social Research of the University of Michigan.

Mr. Zhang firstly gave a brief introduction to the working responsibility of NBS, Chinese statistical system, data collection modes and statisticians training. Apart from these, Mr. Feng Nailin, Director-General of the Department of Population and Employment Statistics reviewed the long history of cooperation between NBS and MichiganUniversity in terms of the statistical sampling technique and meanwhile exchanged views with Mr. Lepkowski on the problems occurred in survey methodology of NBS.

Mr. Lepkowski elaborated on the survey methodology program currently conducted in MichiganUniversity and their cooperative program with PekingUniversity. Both sides expressed common wish of strengthening the cooperation in survey methodology in the future.

The participants also attending the discussion were Messrs. Du Weidqun, Counsel of the Department of International Cooperation and Guo Zhigang, Professor of Department of Sociology of PekingUniversity.
