The International Workshop on High Temperature Ceramics and Ceramic Matrix Composites Held in Xi an

NPU held the InternationalWorkshop on High-Temperature Ceramics and Ceramic Matrix Composites (HTCCMC) on April 15 in Xi'an. The symposium aims at building up a high-level platform for exchanging the views on HTCCMC, its research progress, product development and application.

Vice President Wei Bingbo addresses the opening ceremony. He says that NPU takes numerous effective measures to build itself into a prestigious research university; in particular, it achieves a great deal in the area of HTCCMC.

Academician Zhang Litong, the chair of the symposium, recalls her career in exploring HTCCMC and says that in the 1990s France and the USA began their applied research on the high-temperature and long-life oxidation-resistant ceramic matrix composites.

Professor Cheng Laifei, executive chair of the symposium, says that 17 invited lectures on several cutting-edge issues of HTCCMC will be delivered, including those by the scholars from the U.S, France, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and by NPU professors and students. The development for several decades shows that tremendous progress has been made in HTCCMC theory, technological development, preparation and commercial application and that HTCCMC is of development potential in the areas of aeronautics and astronautics, land transport, electricity generation, nuclear energy, chemical engineering etc.

The research team headed by CAE Academician Zhang Litong founded the National Key Laboratory of Science and Technology on Thermostructural Composite Materials, the first of its kind in the country. The Project of High-Temperature and Long-Life Oxidation-Resistant Ceramic Matrix Composites Application won the National Technological Innovation First Prize, the first winning of the prize for six years running. The research team is on the way to autonomous innovation and big-scale development of internationally cutting-edge new materials.

The symposium is held by NPU's National Key Laboratory of Science and Technology on Thermostructural Composite Materials, the Center for Advanced Materials and Forming Discipline Talent Introduction and the Office for International Cooperation and is jointly sponsored by China Society for Silicate, China Society for Composites and the Composite Materials Specialty Committee of China Society for Aeronautics. The success of the symposium shows that NPU has international influence on HTCCMC and further promotes the international exchange and cooperation in this field.
