Professor Zheng Yongfei Elected Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences

Results of the Chinese Academy of Sciences'2009 academician elections were released to the public on the afternoon of December 4. The newly elected CAS academicians include Professor Zheng Yongfei, vice provost of USTC's School of Earth and Space Sciences and director of CAS Key Laboratory of Crust-Mantle Materials and Environments.

Professor Zheng Yongfei Elected Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences

Professor Zheng Yongfei was born in Changfeng County, Anhui Province, in October 1959. He received his bachelor's degree from the Department of Geology, Nanjing University, in 1982, and also master's degree in 1985. Later, he received a Ph.D. in Science from the Geochemistry Institute, Georg-August-University of Goettingen in 1991, and subsequently did his postdoctoral research at the Institute of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry, University of Tuebingen, Germany, from 1992 to 1993. On his return to China in the autumn of 1993, he was appointed associate professor at USTC, and then promoted to full professor at the end of 1994. Professor Zheng became a doctoral supervisor in 1995. Professor Zheng once served as the chairman of USTC's Department of Earth and Space Sciences, and now is vice provost of USTC's School of Earth and Space Sciences and director of CAS Key Laboratory of Crust-Mantle Materials and Environments.

It is known that, at present, 45 USTC graduates are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
