On November 10th, the opening ceremony of the 12th USTB-HU Symposium was held in USTB. Chancellor Luo Weidong, President Xu Jinwu and Vice President Zhang Yue of USTB, and their counterpart, Vice President Hondo Takeo of Hokkaido University (HU) attended the ceremony together with students from USTB and HU. And Prof. Wang Ge, Director of the International Office chaired the symposium.
Prof. Xu Jinwu, President of USTB, made a welcome speech extending his best regards to Mr. Hondo Takeo and the HU students. And he noted that with the unremitted efforts of both universities, this academic symposium has witnessed 24 years of broadened cooperation and exchange between USTB and HU, providing a platform for students to communicate with each other.
Vice President Hondoh Takeo thanked USTB, in his speech, for the hospitality and preparation of the symposium. He said that USTB was the first Chinese university with whom HU signed the cooperation contract, so he hoped that HU and USTB would continue an all-round dialogue and cooperation to broaden the exchanges and collaboration in all areas, at all levels and through all channels.
Later in the symposium, Prof. Baba Naoshi (Dean of School of Engineering), Prof. Kurihara Masahito (Dean of School of Information Science and Technology) and Prof. Ozaki Ichiro of School of Law of HU, and Prof. Qu Xuanhui (Dean of School of Material Science and Engineering) made reports on disciplinary building and scientific research development of their respective schools. And Prof. Toru Yamashita delivered a brief introduction to the upcoming internship program, expecting the involvement of more graduate students.
In the afternoon of November 10th, three detailed discussions were held respectively on engineering, information science and law. This symposium has made an abstract book according to the paper submitted. And the 13th Symposium is scheduled to be held in Hokkaido University in 2012.
