On May 13th, a seminar regarding energy conservation and pollution reduction was held between USTB and Hong Kong universities with a theme of "low-carbon life". Prof. Zhang Xinxi, Vice President of USTB, Prof. Wang Ge, Director of the International Office, Prof. Xia Dehong, Deputy Dean of School of Mechanical Engineering attended the seminar. And students of USTB and from Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Poly U), Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), City University of Hong Kong (City U) also joined the seminar, which was a part of "The Third National Energy Conservation and Pollution Reduction Competition for College Students".
Prof. Zhang Xinxi, Vice President of USTB, extended his warm welcome on behalf of the organizing committee of the competition to students from Hong Kong universities. He said that, examining an avalanche of topics concerning energy conservation and pollution reduction, this seminar, for the first time, invited Hong Kong universities for participation in the "National Energy Conservation and Pollution Reduction Competition for College Students". He hoped that the seminar could be a platform for further communications between students of USTB and Hong Kong universities to broaden their scientific horizon and encourage innovation. At last, he called upon students to live a low-carbon life to make contributions to environmental protection.
Students' representative Zhang Kaiping from the Chinese University of Hong Kong made a speech at the seminar, noting that this was their first time to attend a conference on energy conservation and pollution reduction in Beijing, so they were looking forward to further discussions with mainland students on topics that are concerned.
Dr. Zhang Ge from School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (USTB) and Chen Youzong from City University of Hong Kong shared their experiences on energy conservation by making presentations respectively on "Indoor Environment and Energy Conservation" and "Development of a Novel Electrical Smart Meter for Advanced Metering Infrastructure".
On the seminar, students of USTB and from Hong Kong universities made elaborated presentations on 28 topics, such as "the energy independence building system based on a new power device converting water, wind and solar energy". These 28 topics ranged from big issues in the fields of energy or mechanics to smart inventions in daily life. A presentation named "From No-air-conditioning Day to the Usage of Air Conditioners" by a group of Hong Kong students is highly praised by the competition judges. Some presentations on the seminar will be recommended to the finals of "The Third National Energy Conservation and Pollution Reduction Competition for College Students".
On May 14th and 15th, students of USTB and Hong Kong universities will pay a visit to the sewage treatment and wind power usage in some energy-saving companies and make researches on energy conservation and pollution reduction.
