USTB held a grand ceremony to award its honorary doctoral degree to Prof. Akito Arima, currently chairman of Japan Science Foundation and former President of the University of Tokyo, in its conference center on September 22nd. Prof. Luo Weidong, Chancellor of USTB, addressed a heart-warming speech to professor Arima for his visit. Prof. Arima, a renowned physicist as well as an influential educationist, has made considerable contribution to China's international cooperation in science and technology. Prof. Luo hoped that after this visit, Prof. Arima can play an important role in improving the academic research and international fame of the university, which is now working hard towards its goal of becoming one of the top ranking research universities in China and an internationally renowned higher education institute in the world.
Prof. Xu Jinwu, president of USTB, conferred an honorary doctoral degree to Prof. Arima. After the degree-conferring ceremony, Prof. Arima made an inspiring speech entitled as Internationalization of Universities and Raising of Universities Levels. He then answered questions from students of USTB and encouraged them to study hard and make good use of college time in order to be all-rounded talents.
As an excellent educator, Prof. Arima, a long-term cooperator with the Chinese scientific community, has won a great number of honors, such as honorary doctors and professors of Beijing University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and also some famous European universities and research institutions.
