2009 Graduate Student Spring Commencement Ceremony

About 1,700 graduate students received degrees at Tsinghua University's 2009 Spring Graduate Commencement Ceremony on the morning of January 19th. Among the graduates, 408 received doctorates and 1,299 received masters degrees. Tsinghua President and Degree Conferral Committee Chairman Gu Binglin along with senior officers Professor Hu Heping, Professor Chen Jining, Professor Wang Jinsong, Professor Xie Weihe, and Professor Chen Xu awarded the diplomas to the students.

The other senior officers attending the ceremony included Professor Zhang Fengchang, Professor Han Jingyang, Professor Cheng Jianping, and Professor Yuan Si.

President Gu delivered a speech at the ceremony. On behalf of the University, he extended warmest congratulations to the graduates. He also reviewed the university s achievements in education and research in the past year and commended the graduates for their hard work and contributions to Tsinghua s development.

The President told the students first to do a thing well, then work hard to make a successful career, and finally to make contributions to the development of the country and the world. He encouraged the graduates to let their actions be guided by Tsinghua s mottos-- Self-discipline and Social Commitment and Actions Speak Louder Than Words . He advised them to be brave in the face of challenges, adopt a global vision, and be tolerant and cooperative in their future work and study.
