Tsinghua Research Achievements Win 23 State Science and Technology Awards

Twenty-three Tsinghua research achievements recently were recognized at the 2008 State Science and Technology Awards. Tsinghua professors accepted the awards on January 9 at the annual National Science-Technology Award Ceremony in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Chinese President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao, Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee Member Li Changchun, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, and Vice Premier Li Keqiang attended the ceremony. State Council Member Liu Yandong announced the State Council's decisions on the 2008 State Science and Technology Awards.

Tsinghua s research achievements rank first among Chinese universities. Of Tsinghua s 23 awards, five were State Natural Science Awards, six were State Technological Invention Awards, and twelve were State Scientific and Technological Progress Awards. Altogether ten research achievements were completed by Tsinghua as the lead research institution in collaboration with others.

The prize-winning research achievements as lead research institution were:, primarily achieved by Academician Lu Qiang and his colleagues (State Natural Science Award second prize);

Nonlinear Control Theory of Large Scale Power Systems

Functional Nanomaterials: Rational Synthesis, Structure, Properties and Their Applications, primarily achieved by Professor Li Yadong and his colleagues (State Natural Science Award second prize);

Formal Models and Logical Foundations of Non-Classical Computation, primarily achieved by Professor Ying Mingsheng and his colleagues (State Natural Science Award second prize);

New Generation Energy Management System for Power Systems with 3-Dimensional Coordination, primarily achieved by Professor Zhang Boming and his colleagues (State Technological Invention Award second prize);

Nano-calcium phosphates/collagen based bone repair materials, primarily achieved by Professor Cui Fuzhai and his colleagues (State Technological Invention Award second prize);

New Technology of Streaming Media Service based on Networks integration, primarily achieved by Professor Dai Qionghai and his colleagues (State Technological Invention Award second prize);

Building an Energy Saving Simulation Analysis Platform-DeST and It's Application, primarily achieved by Academician Jiang Yi and his colleagues (State Scientific and Technological Progress Award second prize);

Polishing, modification and measurement techniques for ultra precision surfaces and their applications, primarily achieved by Professor Luo Jianbin and his colleagues (State Scientific and Technological Progress Award second prize);

Fluvial Processes of Braided Rivers and Its Application in the Regulation of the Yellow River and Tarim River, primarily achieved by Professor Wang Guangqian and his colleagues (State Scientific and Technological Progress Award second prize);

TH-ID face and writer identification and verification systems, primarily achieved by Professor Ding Xiaoqing and his colleagues (State Scientific and Technological Progress Award second prize);

By the end of 2008, Tsinghua had won a total of 377 National Science and Technology Awards, including 41 National Natural Science Awards, 111 National Technological Invention Awards, and 225 National Scientific and Technological Progress Awards.
