Dr. James Chao and Ms. Elaine L. Chao Visit SMU

On July 15th, Dr. James Chao, Chairman of Foremost Group, and his daughter, Ms. Elaine L. Chao, former United States Secretary of Labor, accompanied by leaders from Chinese People s Institute of Foreign Affairs and Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office, visited SMU. Prof. Yu Shicheng, President of SMU, Prof. Jin Yongxing and Prof. Kong Fancun, Vice Presidents of SMU received the guests.

During the talk, Prof. Yu briefed the guests on talent training, scientific research and foreign exchange over the past year and extended his sincere gratitude to them for their contribution to SMU s development. Prof. Yu also says that the hard work and devotion made by Chao s family have always been an encouragement to SMU students and teachers. Dr. Chao and Ms. Chao appreciated SMU s rapid development and expressed their congratulations.

Dr. Chao and his daughter visited the Mulan Memorial Hall which was built in commemoration of Mrs. Ruth Mulan Chu Chao and her ordinary but also extraordinary life. Ms. Chao thanked all SMU has been doing to carry forward the Mulan Spirit: Benevolence, Optimism, Perseverance and Ambition.

In August 28th, 2008, Madam Chao, then United States Secretary of Labor visited SMU and delivered a wonderful speech to SMU students and teachers.
