On April 26, 2010, the inauguration ceremony of the Confucius Institute of the State of Washington, established in collaboration with Sichuan University, was held in the city of Seattle, USA. Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire, officials of relevant departments of State of Washington and Seattle Municipal Government, representatives of Washington University and Seattle public universities and representatives of all social circles of Washington State attended the inauguration ceremony.
Xu Lin, director of Hanban, Consul General and Gao Zhansheng and Counsellor Shao Wei of China s Consulate General in Seattle, Prof. Shi Jian, Vice President of Sichuan University, as well as leaders of Chongqing Municipal Education Commission attended the inauguration ceremony.
In April 2006, Governor Christine Gregoire proposed to President Hu Jintao who was then visiting Washington State the hope to establish Confucius Institute in Washington State. The newly established Washington State Confucius Institute consists of the Confucius Institute jointly established and managed by Sichuan University and Washington Sate University and the Confucius Institute Teaching Center jointly established by Seattle and Chongqing Municipal Education Commission. After the founding of the institute in Washington State, it will involve in the whole range of kindergarten-to-college Chinese language teaching, training and certification for Chinese language teachers, organizing various kinds of Chinese language and cultural exchange activities, and planning all sorts of cultural promotion activities such as research programs and seminars related to China
The Confucius Institute in Washington State is the third of its kind established and managed in America in collaboration with Sichuan University which will provide vigorous support to the institute in many aspects such as teachers and library materials.
