On the afternoon of Oct 30, the "2009 Artistry Southern Festival of Reading (SFR)" award ceremony, co-organized by School of Journalism and Communication of SCUT, was held on South Campus of SCUT. Many culture celebrities gathered at SCUT, sharing their 60 years' reading experiences with students and teachers attending the ceremony, and also presenting the awards to the winners.
The festival has elected awards like "Top 10 most popular books in 2009", "Top 10 Most Popular writers in 2009", "10-Year Reading in the New Century---Top 10 Most Popular Writers and Books", etc. It is said that the most distinguished feature of this ceremony is that for each award, only one person will represent the 10 winners to receive the award; and the awards are not categorized by literary criteria but by readers' preference so as to highlighting its popularity.
"The qualities brought by reading can be given by no other means," said GUO Jinming, the winner of "Top 10 most popular writers", which elicited a burst of thundering applause. The atmosphere reached its height when YI Zhongtian delivered his award-reflection speech. He said, "I'd like to bow to you twice, the first for thanking your concern of reading in the last 10 years, the second for hoping that you will continue your concern of reading in the following 10 years", "Those writers who don't bear readers in mind will not be remembered by the readers".
It is reported that Southern Festival of Reading is sponsored by the Organization Committee of SFR, organized by Southern Television Guangdong (TVS). Its slogan is Open Your 60 Years' Reading Memory. The Advisory Group consists of well-known scholars, media professionals and artists, among whom are LIU Sifen, YU Dan, YI Zhongtian, QIAN Wenzhong, etc. The event lasts for 2 months, and has drawn the attendance of 180,000 reading voters.
