"Happy New Year, Cheers!" Feb. 23, 2010 was Dec. 28, 2009 on the Chinese lunar calendar. No. 6 canteen on North Campus and No.1 canteen on South Campus were decorated with lanterns and festoons. Three sodalities celebrating 2010 Spring Festival were held there for students staying at school during the vacation. The University leaders joined in the celebration and extended their best wishes to the staying students.
On the sodalities, University leaders including President LI Yuanyuan, Vice Presidents ZHANG Zhen-gang, PENG Xinyi, and QIU Xueqing, delivered the New Year blessings to the present students and their parents at home.
President Li Yuanyuan went out of his way to the table of students from Xinjiang. After learning that some students' families were suffering from severe snow disaster, President Li urged them to send back a message of safety and promised that the University would take care of any difficulty they had in their study or life.
As for YUAN Gao (Chinese name), a foreign student from Pakistan, it was the first time to stay for the traditional Chinese New Year. He said: "Chinese Lunar New Year is full of excitement, and the activities are well organized. I have much fun and feel so happy!" A student surnamed Chen from the School of Mechanical & Automotive Engineering, hit the jackpot in Luck Draw and smiled from ear to ear. He said that he felt quite delighted spending his festival days at school and expressed his gratitude to the school's attentive arrangement.
Both Chinese and foreign students presented wonderful performances by dancing and singing, and enjoyed themselves playing games.
According to statistics, there are 580 undergraduates, 450 postgraduates and 110 foreign students staying on the campuses this winter holiday. Besides the dinner on New Year's Eve, SCUT has arranged a visit to the hospitalized students and offered 300 yuan for each of them. Part-time jobs such as librarians, dormitory attendants were provided for 460 students in total.
Further more, visits were paid to students of Minority from Tibet and Xinjiang, and 200-yuan "hongbao" (red paper containing money as a gift) were given out to the poverty-stricken students. In addition, from New Year's Eve to Jan. 3, 2010 on the Chinese lunar calendar, students can enjoy free meals in school canteens with their student cards.
