Prof. Hong Yinxing, Chancellor of Nanjing University, speaks at the freshman orientation.
The Student Affairs Office of Nanjing University (NJU) invited the university s senior administrators to give lectures from Sept. 22 to 23 to freshman students on Xianlin Campus in order to help the new students become acclimated to campus life at NJU.
The lecturers included NJU Chancellor Hong Yinxing, President Chen Jun, Academician Wang Dezi, Director Zhu Qingbao of the Publicity Department, Director Sang Zhiqin of the Centre of Mental Health Education and Research, Senior Doctor Zhu Mei of the University Hospital, Director Dai Changshun of the Security Department and Curator Assistant Ren Yasu of the University Library.
The first lecture was delivered by Chancellor Hong Yinxing. In his two-hour lecture entitled University, University Students and University Spirit, Chancellor Hong talked about the missions, functions and characteristics of a university and stressed that the university spirit consists of the spirit of science, humanism, creativity, freedom and democracy. He also explained in depth NJU s motto of Sincerity with Aspiration, Perseverance and Integrity, and urged the students to develop a down-to-earth attitude and take a broad view.
President Chen Jun delivered a speech entitled Nanjing University s Student Education Theory and Reform Measures. At the end of his speech, President Chen encouraged the students to make full use of their freshman year to learn how to study, how to make decisions, and how to face difficulties with courage, and to gradually develop elite qualities being independent, responsible, brave and honest.
