MOU Signed between Tianjin University and the University of Montreal

On June 8th, 2007, a delegation from the University of Montreal (UdeM), Canada, headed by President Luc Vinet visited Tianjin University. President Ke Gong met the delegation. Present at the meeting were Vice President Gequn Shu, Professor Jianmin Bao, Vice Dean of School Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, Mr.

Yao Gu, Vice Dean of Graduate School, Professor Shuxin Wang, Director of Office of Science and Technology and Professor Fuling Yang, Director of International Cooperation Office. In the meeting, both Presidents gave a brief review of the history, education and research of each university, and discussed the cooperation prospect and possibilities between the two universities in the areas of communication, materials, energy, etc.

Later, President Gong and President Vinet signed the MoU for Academic Exchange and Cooperation between the two universities and the Agreement of Cooperation Concerning Candidates at the Doctoral Level. According to the Agreement, a maximum of 30 fellowships from UdeM will be awarded to doctoral candidates in TU, one of the 9 targeted Universities in China.

These candidates will also be sponsored by PhD scholarship program of the China Scholarship Council. After the signing ceremony, collaboration discussion hosted by VP Shu was held. Director Shuxin Wang and Dr. Joseph Hubert, Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences, UdeM gave a brief talk on the research capabilities of each university.

Then the two parties discussed in details about the joint research and postgraduate co-supervision programs. The delegation also visited Feng Jicai Research Institute of Art and Literature and the exhibition in the School of Architecture. Founded in 1878, the University of Montreal is now the largest university in Quebec and the second largest in Canada.

With over 55,000 students from around the world and some 10,000 employees, the UdeM awards close to 10,000 diplomas at different leves. Deeply rooted in Montreal and dedicated to its international mission, the UdeM is one of the top universities in the French-speaking world.
