Sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and the Beijing Municipal government, a figure painting exhibition of Fang Zengxian is on view at Hall 1,2,3,8 and 9 until Oct.20.
Fang Zengxian is one of the representatives of the Chinese figure painting of the Realism school in the later half of the 20th century and also an influential founder of the Zhe school in the Chinese artistic circle. With devotion to the artistic creation for more than half a century, the artist has experienced the development of the style, representing the aesthetic conceptions and styles of the traditional Chinese paintings in different historical stages.
The artist has succeeded in shouldering the historical mission of revitalizing the new Chinese figure painting. He has made a contribution to establishing a systematic and effective educational mechanism of the Zhe school of the figure paintings. Meantime, he has played a proactive role in promoting the development of the contemporary art in Shanghai and across the country.
The figure painting exhibition entitled Line by line is an important retrospective solo painting exhibition following the huge figure painting exhibitions, which were successfully held at Shanghai Art Museum in 2007 and Zhejiang Art Museum in 2009. A total of more than 200 exhibits comprise his representative ink figure paintings, drawings, sketch, and calligraphies at each stage for the past 60 years, as well as related important historical photographs and documents.
