During his presence at the NPC & CPPCC annual session, Mr. Chen Xuyuan, Chairman of SIPG, made his comment on Port of Shanghai in 2010 when interviewed by media, When looking back at 2010, Port of Shanghai experienced a boom in business volume. We surpassed Singapore to become the busiest port in the world in terms of both container throughput and cargo tonnage. The container throughput rose to 29.09 million and total cargo tonnage reached 650 million tons, which showed a strong recovery in the post-crisis era. Furthermore, he added with his expectation for the future, In 2015, the container handling capacity of Shanghai will be around 36 to 37 million TEUs. Supported by favorable environment of China s macro-economy, the port industry will follow its steady upwards development trend. The restructuring of economy, such as relocating industries to the interior, will bring great opportunities to port industry and put higher requirement for comprehensive logistics service. Port industry is now changing from development bottle-neck to slightly over-capacity, which requires us to make more efforts to foster the competitive advantages, such as information technology.
