COSL s two working vessels received commendations in Qingdao s battle against algae outbreak
(4 August 2008 - Beijing) China Oilfield Services Limited ( COSL or the Company , HKSE stock code: 2883, SSE stock code: 601808) is pleased to announce that the Company has made significant contributions to the battle against the algae outbreak at Olympic sailing venue by sending two high power vessels, COSL Binhai 286 and Offshore Oil 655 , to Qingdao Waters. The two vessels operated in days and nights between July 4 and July 9 and completed the task of blocking algae from Olympic sailing venue by throwing water drums, anchor stones and other stuff into Qingdao waters. Shandong and Qingdao Government have given their recognition to COSL s action in enhancing the smooth sailing competition at Qingdao.

In June 2008, an algae outbreak in Qingdao has invaded Qingdao offshore, the Olympics sailing venue and beaches along the coast, thus threatening the smooth hosting of the Olympic sailing competition. Under the request of Shandong Provincial Government and coordination of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), COSL overcame the difficulties of limited resource resulted from heavy workload, and participated in the battle against algae by sending out two high power vessels: Binhai 286 and Offshore Oil 655 immediately.

Binhai 286 and Offshore Oil 655 arrived at Qingdao Olympic sailing venue at 7:00 on July 4 after 40-hour journey and started the clean-up tasks and set barriers against algae at once. Offshore Oil 655 has shipped 5,000 meters of protection nets, five trucks of clump weights and around 260 pieces of the anchor stepping stones, and completed 15,928 meters of operation, which accounted for 62.

34% of the total length along the Olympic sailing venue. The ship not only took the responsibility of providing operation services for rescuing, but also took care of the daily life of people from Qingdao Municipal Government and China Offshore Environmental Service Ltd. (COES). Binhai286 dropped 4 military-used water drums (anchor is 8-ton in weight, the anchor cables is 50-meter in length, the float is 3-meter in height and 2-meter in diameter with total weight of 10 tons) to set up nets, and took only 3 hours to complete the dropping of four big anchors at a time when the sea wave was two meters high.

It also completed the shipping of 20,000-meter cables for fixed nets, 800 floats and so on. Binhai 286 and Offshore Oil 655 conquered the difficulties from heavy fog and ocean current and worked non-stop in four nights and five days competed with limited time, and basically cleaned up the algae in 50 square kilometers from sailing competition region, purse net to inner arena at Qingdao sailing venue.

We joined the algae clean-up work once received the request, therefore showing COSL s value of servicing the country as a whole and working together as a team.

During the course, our staff proactively followed the instructions of headquarters against algae in Shandong Province and received commendations from Shandong s and Qingdao s Government, which proved the excellent quality and technology of COSL and our staff, also demonstrating the high mobility of COSL s strong troop.

Now, the two working vessels participated in the battle against algae have returned to Tanggu production base and are back into normal production.
