From Sept. 28 to Oct. 2, the Confucius Institute at Rhodes University, South Africa, which was jointly established by Rhodes University, Confucius Headquarter and Jinan University held the China Week Program. A delegation from Jinan University attended the program. Members included Dr. Ban Chao, Director of Office for the Promotion of Chinese Overseas, Mr.
Li Lijia, Deputy Director of the International Affairs Office, Dr. Mei Linhai, Professor from College of the Economics, Dr. Tang Yuhua, Associate Professor from the same college, Mr. Wang Jinshan and Zhu Guiming, lecturer from the College of Arts and Dr. Luo Xiaoying from the Department of Applied Linguistics, College of Chinese Language and Culture.
This China Week is the 2nd one since the CIRU was founded. It was also the first time that the program was combined with the celebration of P.R.C s anniversary. Mr. Ambassador of China to South Africa and Mr. Wei Yanggen, First secretary in the Education Department of the Embassy went to Rhodes University to attend the program. Activities of the China Week was widely publicized on campus by website and posters.
On the afternoon of Sept. 29, the delegation arrived at Grahamstown together with the ambassador. They first attended a presentation given by students who came to China for summer camp in July this year. After listening to the presentation, ambassador Zhong gave a speech and highly commented on the students progress in Chinese language in such a short time.
He also spoke highly of the exchange between Jinan University and Rhodes University, for it would undoubtedly broaden the vision of the students. He also wished that students from South Africa could understand deeper about the development of China by putting it in the context of the history. Ambassador Zhong also attended a photography exhibition of Guangdong and East Cape conducted by four students from the two universities.
In the evening, Dr. Saleem Badat, Vice Chancellor of Rhodes University hosted a welcome banquet for ambassador Zhong and the JNU delegation. Again, they both celebrated the successful holding of the China Week Program and the excellent work done by the CIRU.
In the following days, a board meeting of the CIRU was held to discuss issues on the further development of CI. Dr. Luo Xiaoying, Mr. Zhu Guiming and Mr. Wang Jinshan gave three lectures on Chinese character, Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting. Prof. Mei Linhai and Tang Yuhua attended the China in Africa symposium, which was part of the China Week programs and gave speeches on China s direct investment in Africa and An overview of China s economic support to Africa .
On the afternoon of Oct. 1, VC Saleem Badat met the delegation and exchanged ideas with the members on social programs of China and South Africa and challenges both universities are facing.
The CIRU has been developing with tremendous momentum since its founding. Currently, there are 25 students at RU studying Chinese. The number is expected to rise to 100 next year. With the CIRU as a platform, the two universities have organized a dozen of inter-institutional programs, which greatly promoted the internationalization at both sides. There will be a number of new programs to be undertaken following this China Week Program.
