The national finals of the 4th Mitsui Chemicals Cup for university students chemical design contest came to a close on October 31, in Changsha. The Five-Tiger Team , made up of five students from College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of HNU, won a second prize after intense competition. Team members were Chen Min, Tang Zeqing, Wang Qing, Zhou Yan and Sun Chao. Hunan Normal University was the first one in Normal Universities to enter the national finals and win prize.

The competition lasted for more than four months and the whole process of program design was exhausting. Besides a large amount of calculation and simulation, the feasibility of the project needed repeated verification. According to the team members, during this period of time, they spent nearly all their time on experimental study and calculation, with very little left to naps and lunches. What s more, they had to suffer from staying up. So, the team members set a Food Reserve Box in laboratory.

After violent competitions with more than 200 rivals, Five-Tiger Team elbowed others out, entered into the finals as the first in regional competition, In the finals, they gave satisfying answers to the questions from judgers from prestigious schools in China and Japan and finally won the national second prize.

Leaders and teachers of College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering attached great importance to this event: related leaders made general deployment and guidance for this contest and provided site and funding; three teachers including Yang Chunming, Zhao Weilang and Yin Jiang, contributed a lot by presiding over routine meeting once a week, which summed up the past work and made arrangement for the next step. Valuable reference materials and suggestions for this program design were also provided.

The College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering stuck to the characteristic teaching philosophy of combining physics, engineering and teaching together , established a experimental area in national talents training mode innovation , thus achieving favourable teaching effect.

The Mitsui Chemicals Cup was supported by Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. in Japan and hosted by the committee of Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China (CIESC). It was the highest level competition for university students majoring in Chemical Engineering in China, aiming at fostering creative thinking, engineeringcapability and team-work spirit in students, as well as creating better academic atmosphere in universities. The contest, with a theme of the collection, storage and utilization of carbon dioxide, was undertaken by Central South University. It required all teams to synthesize the program feasibility demonstration, process design, equipment selection and typicalequipment design, workshop appliance layout design, plant general layout design, economic analysis and evaluation, etc, to come up with a workable engineering technology scheme.
