Three undergraduate students, class of 2007 of the School of Civil Engineering, are rewarded the Outstanding Winner and SIAM Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Award in Mathematical Modeling Contest held in America this February. This is a milestone for Chinese team, because SIAM award was always in the pockets of teams from Harvard University, MIT, Caltech and other internationally renowned universities. But this time, the HUST team, with their remarkable genius and unremitting efforts stands out from 2,254 teams from 14 countries in the contest.

SIAM was founded in the USA in the early 1950s, aiming to promote the research, development and application of applied mathematics and computational mathematics. Thousands of famous experts from different countries in applied mathematics and computational mathematics, engineers, statists and math instructors work for SIAM. Because of its reputation, SIAM has gained four hundred members, including universities, companies and scientific research institutions. And SIAM takes pride in publishing high level and excellent periodicals.

Launched in 1988, SIAM Award has a history of more than twenty years. Usually, the specialists review panel of the society will make a decision about the only SIAM Award from Outstanding Winners after the Mathematical Modeling Contest each year. Besides, all winners will be rewarded with certificates and prize as well as the qualification for SIAM members about one year. What s more, they get the invitation to the SIAM annual meeting that year.
