Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao inspected Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics during his two-day inspection tour of Wuhan on Oct 22.
Wen debriefed the scientific achievements of the lab and the university, and encouraged the researchers to step up efforts in self innovation in a bid to provide strong scientific backup for increasing the international competitiveness of national optoelectronic industries. He also urged HUST students to study hard, brave for practice and become competent and committed talents.
Wen saw the scientific attainments like high definition 3D-NVD, fiber laser, numerical control equipments, phase change memory, LED chips as well as technology of LED encapsulating , OLED and Nanoimprint etc, where he acclaimed the good performance when wearing 3D glasses watching 3D video program and hailed as he knew the technology held independent intellectual property.
In front of a fiber laser demonstration platform, Premier Wen inquired Yan Dapeng, a thousand-talent-scheme winner, about the research conducted abroad and got to know the structure, material and transmission distance of laser devices. Wen was briefed on researchers' hard work in breaking through foreign technology monopolization and developing high performance numerical machine tools by Mr Chen Jihong, president of Huazhong Numerical Control Co., Ltd. After enquiring the technology gap between national and foreign numerical control equipments, Wen encouraged researchers to make efforts to improve self innovation.
Wen also listened to Miao Xiangshui, distinguished professor and Chung Kong Scholar, on the features of phase-change memory PRAM , the superiority of PRAM over flash memory and the industrial development.
Apuanlite Optoelectronics Technology CO., LTD is a company producing LED chips. Mr Wu Zhihong, president of the company, compared a 3 W LED bulb with a 11 W efficient light bulb in brightness and energy consumption. Wen praised LED light bulb for its brightness and energy conservation.
While visiting the exhibition board displaying the research achievements in biomedical optoelectronics, biomedicine, high magnetic field, advanced manufacturing and equipments, high precision gravity measurements, CO2 reduction and resources-oriented utilization, Wen listened attentively to the development and achievements of the related scientific platforms.
After the visit, Premier Wen addressed the students and staff who were holding a scientific festival. "Since the founding of the new China and especially after the reform and opening up, great changes have taken place. Of these changes, the emerging of a large number of high caliber talents in various fields in China has drawn the world's attention, " he said.
"We place our hope in you for the future, and we are determined to increase input in science and education to cultivate various talents for socialist modernization", he added. He also urged students to have lofty ambitions and study hard.
