A set of Magnetic Suspension Chimes, developed by the research group led by Prof. KONG Fanrang from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), made a stunning debut at the Shanghai World Expo closing ceremony on October 31, 2010.
Controlled by highly sensitive sensors, the magnetic suspension chimes weighing tens of kilograms each can be fully suspended in the air without any support and can remain stable under hard strikes of actors, winning great amazement from the audience.
"The chimes help to rejuvenate Chinese ancient civilization by adopting modern technology, and they have promoted our national pride," said Prof. KONG who had overcome various difficulties in their design and who seemed quite relieved after the wonderful performance of the chimes.
USTC had also been invited to perform a danced curve system at the Expo opening ceremony, which has earned the university much reputation.
