High-ranking officials and prominent figures from political, academic and business circles in China, Japan and South Korea gathered in east China's Zhejiang Province Sunday to attend the Northeast Asia Trilateral Forum.

The sixth session of the forum opened in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province. Former Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan and former Korean Prime Minister Lee Hong-Koo attended the welcome party on Sunday evening.

Li Congjun, President of Xinhua News Agency, which is the organizer of the forum, said he believed that the forum would promote cooperation among the three countries in the fields of finance, trade, environmental protection, energy, culture and education.

Xinhua News Agency will strengthen its communication and cooperation with media organizations from throughout the world, Li said.

The forum, cosponsored by China's Xinhua News Agency, Japan's Nikkei news group and South Korea's leading daily newspaper, Joong-Ang Ilbo, seeks to strengthen non-governmental exchanges among the three nations.

The yearly event has been held alternately in the three countries since 2006.
