Flood Control In Kuqa

7 towns and townships along the lower reaches of Weigan river, including Hanikatam Township, Dongkuotang Town and Akwustang Township of Kuqa County, were hit by flood these days. The dam at Kuqa County, which was supposed to protect the places at the lower reaches, were hit by floodwater released from Kezil Reservoir, the largest one in Aksu Prefecture at the upper reaches of Weigan River. The floodwater flew at the speed of 1,000 cubic meter per second and broke the dam with a 50-meter-long breach.

At 11:00 o'clock on Aug.3rd, over 2,000 soldiers and locals rushed to the scene. Through over-50-hour effort, the breach was blocked at 18:00 o'clock,Aug.4th.

XU LIANG, DEPUTY HEAD KUQA COUNTY:

"Since it is dammed up, the pressure of flood prevention at the lower reaches has been released. The success is significant for this year's flood prevention of Weigan River."
