Mr. Lin Xianyu Met with Japanese Statistical Delegation

Mr. Lin Xianyu, Deputy Commissioner of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) met with the 25th Japanese Statistical Delegation headed by Mr. Suzuki Motoyuki, Deputy Director-General of the National Statistics Center of the Ministry of Internal Affair and Communications (MIC) on 26 September 2006.

Mr. Lin Xianyu pointed out that statistical exchange between China and Japan has continued for 26 years since 1980. Through the activities under the exchange programme, the NBS has learnt quite deal from Japan, examples includes the population census and establishment census. Mr. Lin introduced some major challenges that the NBS is faced with: The first is to improve the data quality and produce reliable statistics for the government, public and the international community; the second is to improve data collection by using more sample surveys and administrative information; and the third is to provide quality services for different user groups including government users.
Mr. Suzuki introduced the progress of Japan s statistical reform for the purpose of meeting the data demands.

On September 27, Mr. Lin invited Mr. Suzuki and Mr. Hayato Iwamoto, Director of Statistical Information Systems Division of Statistics Bureau of MIC to make presentations for the NBS senior staff. Mr. Suzuki talked about recent development and future orientation of the statistical reform in Japan while Mr. Hayato Iwamoto focused on the on-going improvement of survey activities in Japan through the building of E-Government programme. Mr. Lin Xianyu pointed out that the statistical agencies of the rest of the world are facing the similar challenges and the reform in Japan is very innovative in many ways for us to learn.
