According to the Dongguan traffic police authority, 21 drivers had been arrested for drunk driving and 5 drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol between June 11 and the early morning of June 28. The number of drink driving cases in Dongguan has seen a rise in the past weeks in line with the commencement of the World Cup in South Africa.
As the World Cup finals approach and the games become more intense, the traffic police have issued a reminder to football fans to pay increased attention to safe driving and to avoid drunk driving at all cost.
As the 2010 FIFA World Cup match are all broadcasted during the night, the police have expected a rise in the number of drink driving cases so they increased the frequency of their random breath testing campaign. Each day from the dinner time to the daybreak of the following day, the police will set temporary check points to test for drunk drivers in areas where the surrounding roads are concentrated with bars, restaurants and entertainment venues that are offering midnight snacks.
Since the opening of the World Cup, 4290 police force have been assigned to curb the rise in drink driving offenses.
