Dongguan plans to hand out contemporary subsidy to the city's lower income groups in order to help them cope with the rising living costs, said a spokesperson with Dongguan Financing Bureau on November 24.
The municipal government will hand out a monthly 60-yuan ($9) to each of its low-income earners from November to next January, said the spokesperson. The plan is expected to cost over 10 million yuan ($1,503,850) of the government s budget.
This one-off subsidy is to help those suffering from increased living costs due to recent price hikes. China's consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October. The hike was mainly due to a 10.1-percent surge in food prices. Food prices have a one-third weighting in China's CPI calculation.
