The development of higher education across the world calls for close ties between teaching, researching and producing. How to break down the wall between universities and enterprises has become the turning point for higher institutions further development. We believe that there should be more innovation and follow-up measures after the fall of the wall ; otherwise, closer ties of teaching, researching and producing will be nothing but some empty words.
Changzhou University (CZU) has a 30-year history of tying together teaching, research, and production, which has also become a feature of the university. CZU has adopted specific follow-up measures to ensure innovation of disciplines, platforms, mechanism and people. CZU has carried out a plan of serving Jiangsu and the petrochemical industry. The university has also started a program named teaching, researching and producing 111 , which means that 100 outstanding professors and PhDs work for a period of time at some enterprises and town governments; 100 bases are set up for the cooperation of researching and producing; and 10 large enterprises become long-term close partners of the university. Through the cooperation with local enterprises, CZU has established seven innovation platforms, including institutes of new energy and petrochemical engineering, and 17 scientific innovation teams. CZU has made many scientific achievements, and won many national and provincial awards and prizes.
The renaming of a university is based on its orientation. As a university bearing the name of the local city, Changzhou University is strong on its disciplines. Among its 30 postgraduate programs, five are in the engineering field. Following the restructuring of industries of Changzhou, CZU will further develop four strong disciplines, namely, chemical engineering, material, mechanics and petroleum, stress the development of bio-pharmaceuticals, energy, environment safety, and IT. The university will also support the development of liberal arts, economics and the science of law. A multi-disciplinary platform will attract more intelligent people. CZU is located at Changzou Science and Education Town, also a national scientific and technological park, which is home to over 300 institutes and about 8000 talents who were well educated home and abroad gather here. Hence, the think tank for local enterprises.
To attract more talents to CZU, we timely put forward a concept of industrial professor with the slogan researching at CZU and founding enterprises at Changzhou . At present, more than 20 experts have joined CZU in developing disciplines and tutoring postgraduate students. Our teachers and postgraduate students are also involved in the research and development at the Science and Education Town. This reciprocal mechanism makes best use of the human resources, and benefits the three sides of government, universities and institutes, and enterprises. Based on Changzhou Science and Education Town, CZU has quickly bore a lot of fruits. The establishment of Robotics Institute in 2010 knits together CZU and Harbin Institute of Technology, one of the top universities in China, in research and production. CZU has also recruited a number of top talents from abroad, who will surely promote CZU s development in material science and pharmaceuticals.
In the past, enterprises turned to universities for help when they had problems and then waved goodbye after they were cured . But now, the relationship between enterprises and universities has turned into real cooperation between partners due to the innovation and follow-up measures of Changzhou University. CZU has set a good example for universities in Jiangsu in the cooperation of teaching, researching and producing.
