From February 19 to 23, the 26th U.S. 2010 Mathematical Contest in Modeling MCM / ICM was successfully held, 48 students from HUST attended the contest and won excellent awards.

HUST students formed 16 teams, and all together they won 5 first prizes, 6 second prizes and 4 third prizes; more than that, a team composed by Xiong Zhe, Mei Qipei and Han Fei from School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics won the top award - Outstanding Winner SIAM Award . This is the first time for HUST to win the top award in 20 years, and it's also a breakthrough for Hubei colleges who have participated in that international contest ever since.

MCM The Mathematical Contest in Modeling is a mathematical contest in modeling for international undergraduates, funded by SIAM American Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics , the National Security Agency and INFORMS Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences , sponsored by COMAP Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications . It was initiated in 1985 and this is the 26th contest. ICM The Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling is a new interdisciplinary contest launched in 2000, and 12 contests has been carried on since then. The two contests are held at the same time.

MCM / ICM Contest requires each participating team composed by 3 students from the same university and choosing one of the 3 problems to work on where A, B for MCM problems, C for ICM , and may use any inanimate aids data, documents and other materials available . They can also use the computers, but not interact with people other than members of the same group. Their job is to scope the problem, develop a mathematical model, then write out their solution in a complete English report. They have only 96 hours to do this - approximately 4 days. The contest sets the Grand Prize Outstanding Winners , first prize Meritorious Winners , second prize Honorable Mentions and third prize Successful Participants .

There were a total of 2,254 teams from 14 countries around the world taking part in the 2010 MCM Contest, from which 9 top awards, 431 first prizes were selected. Meanwhile, 356 teams from 4 countries took part in the ICM Contest, a total of 4 top awards, 45 first prizes were selected.
