30th Anniversary of the Cardiovascular Diseases Institute

30th Anniversary of the Cardiovascular Diseases Institute

Write: Holly [2011-05-20]

On June 12, the 30th anniversary celebration of the Cardiovascular Disease Institute, Union Hospital, was held. Professor Peter Libby an internationally renowned expert on atherosclerosis, the dean of Cardiology Department in Brigham Women's Hospital of Harvard Medical School, chief editor of Braunwald Cardiology 8th Edition , and over 50 foreign experts from the United States, Germany, Sweden and other well-known cardiovascular scholars from Wuhan, Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Jinan and Guangzhou attended the meeting.

On the celebration assembly, the third International Forum on Targeted Therapy of Cardiovascular Disease --- Atherosclerosis Special, was co-sponsored by the Institute of Cardiovascular Disease of Tongji Medical College, Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of Biological Targeted Therapy, the Cardiology Department of Union Hospital and Clinical Cardiology Editorial Office.

In the course of 30 years, the Institute has made rapid progress in their patient-treatment, student-teaching and medical research work. It has successfully deployed multiple clinical interventional treatment and surgery, assumed many national key research projects, gained world-leading innovative results and fostered large number of domestic and international well-known talents. The Cardiovascular Diseases Institute will continue to make unremitting efforts for the cause of cardiovascular diseases in China in the future.

The Thirtieth Anniversary of the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Union Hospital approved by the Ministry of Health, Wuhan Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases was established in 1980, which is one of the earliest posts on Cardiovascular Research in China.

In June 1985, the Institute changed its name to Institute of Cardiovascular Disease of Tongji Medical University; in May 2000, named Institute of Cardiovascular Disease of Tongji Medical College, HUST; in April 2010 re-changed its name to Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases of Union Hospital of Tongji Medical College.

After 30 years of development, the Institute now consists of 3 departments, namely, cardiovascular surgery, cardiovascular medicine and cardiac ultrasound, all among the national leading level.

Cardiovascular Surgery - represents the highest level of national cardiac surgery

The Cardiovascular Surgery of Union Hospital, approved to establish by the Ministry of Health on January 10, 1980, is the earliest professional institution for medical treatment, teaching and research on cardiovascular diseases. After 30 years development, it has become the largest surgical treatment center for cardiovascular diseases in Hubei Province, and even the South-Central China. Its comprehensive strength ranks among the nation's top leaders.

The Cardiac Surgery Department has pooled a large number of famous cardiovascular surgeons and young or middle-aged experts who acquired their doctoral degree from the United States, Europe and Japan. They took the lead in the country for performing operations like complex congenital heart diseases, severe valvular diseases, severe coronary heart diseases and emergency aneurysm surgeries.

Surgical operations currently covered all aspects of cardiovascular diseases, including all the most difficult and complex operation; no age limits the minimum age of 2 days after birth and the maximum age of 87 years old ; no weight restrictions from less than 2kg weight to 100kg or more with successful rate as high as 98.5%.

Ever since its foundation, the institute has performed bypass surgery on more than 30,000 patients, among which critical and emergency cases accounting for around 60%. More than 1,000 operations in 2002, 1,500 in 2007, 1,800 in 2008, and 2,100 in 2009. An average of 12 operations were performed per day, maximum of 18 operations per day. The annual heart surgeries carried out here rank the top 10 in China, and top 3 among the domestic general hospitals.

Cardiovascular Medicine - reelected national key discipline

The Cardiology Department was reelected the national key discipline in 2001 and 2007. In 2008, it was approved as the first training base for "Coronary Heart Disease Intervention" and "Arrhythmia 'Ablation Therapy and Implantable Devices'" by the Ministry of Health. In 2009, it was approved to construct as "the Key Laboratory of Biological Targeted Therapy" by the Ministry of Education.

In the past 30 years, the Cardiology Department made rapid progress in clinical and scientific research, the direction of the main subjects including: cardiovascular disease immunology, bio-targeted therapeutics, cardiac electrophysiology, interventional cardiology and cardiac molecular biology.

After 60 years of development, there are 33 in-service doctors, including 11 professors, 7 associate professors. There are now 140 beds available, with CCU wards, cardiac catheterization lab, cardiac electrophysiology room, ECG room, cardiovascular biochemistry room, cardiovascular immunity room, cardiovascular cell electrophysiological room and other basic researching labs.

Up to now, it has provided effective health care services for a total of 100,000 cardiovascular patients at home and abroad, currently nearly 50,000 out-patient, 4,000 hospitalized patients, and 2,500 cases of cardiac interventional surgery annually.

Cardiology Department was the first unit approved by the State Council to grant master's and doctoral degrees, in 1995 it was approved to set up postdoctoral research station, assuming undergraduates, seven-year, eight-year students teaching of cardiovascular diseases, having fostered 400 master's degree students and 180 doctoral students.

Ultrasound Department - the founding place of echocardiography

Ultrasound Department was founded by Prof. Wang Xinfang, Wang Jiazhen and Huang Youzhen in 1961, Which carried out earliest clinical ultrasound diagnosis and echocardiography in China.

In 1963, the Department developed the first Chinese 3-synchronized echocardiography which can display with the ECG phonocardiogram, and in 1978 a new imaging method called cardiac ultrasound by hydrogen peroxide was created. The Department first carried out Color Doppler research in 1985, the first transesophageal echocardiography study in 1990, the first 3-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography study in 1992, and the first dynamic echocardiography in 1995.

The researchers of the Department also pioneered the dynamic 3-dimensional reconstruction of color Doppler flow in 2000, and launched the first real-time three-dimensional ultrasound study in 2002. After 2004, the Department is committed to basic and applied research on ultrasound contrast agents.

The department was the first doctor-degree-authorizing station for ultrasound specialty in China and the first post-doctoral research station approved by the State Council, having fostered 3 postdoctoral talents, 50 doctoral students and 97 masters.

After 50 years' development, its clinical, researching and teaching level all remain the leading position in China and internationally advanced, enjoying a high reputation among the peers. Carried out here are the cardiac, abdominal, small organs , vascular, musculoskeletal, fetal cardiac and other conventional ultrasonography. The annual clinical admissions reach 200,000.

Ultrasound Imaging remains the leading position in China, especially in the diagnosis of acoustic contrast, difficult and complex cardiac diseases, fetal echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, contrast echocardiography and so on.

At home and abroad, their invention of hydrogen peroxide imaging is widely used in endocardiac shunt and reflux, pulmonary arteriovenous fistula diagnosis. Left ventricular myocardial perfusion imaging was first performed in China, which can be used for evaluation of myocardial microcirculating perfusion and coronary reserve of CAD patients, identification of myocardial viability and infarction and so on, all among the highest level in China.

Meanwhile, the Department also carried out intraoperative ultrasound monitoring, real-time 3-dimensional echocardiography tests, abdominal, vascular, small parts and musculoskeletal ultrasound diagnosis, superconducting intervention therapy, enhanced abdominal organs dynamic acoustic contrast imaging.
