Opera grand prix begins

The Maria Callas Grand Prix, a prestigious annual international competition for opera singers, is currently underway in Beijing as it has included a Chinese division for the first time in the event's 36-year history.
The occasion has attracted over 100 aspiring young Chinese singers to compete for a chance to participate in the grand prix to be held in March in Athens.
After two cycles of competition, in the presence of an audience and international jury, 10 singers will be selected to travel to Greece.
The jury in the Chinese division includes Grammy-award winning soprano, Cheryl Studer, Chinese tenor Ding Yi and soprano Sun Xiuwei.
Held under UNESCO, the Maria Callas Grand Prix encompasses both classical opera and piano music in different styles.
"The inclusion of the Chinese division will bridge young Chinese singers with the international opera arena and elevate opera singing in the country," organizers said.
