"The Art of the Enlightenment", a major exhibition jointly organized by the National Museum of China and three German museums, opened in Beijing Friday.

The exhibition, with 579 pieces of art works on display, presents the entire artistic spectrum of the arts of the Enlightenment -- ranging from masterpieces in painting, sculpture, drawings and prints, through to crafts and fashion and even exquisite scientific instruments, according to the organizers.

Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong and visiting German Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle inaugurated the exhibition.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Liu said the exhibition was a big event in China-Germany cultural exchanges and a proof of the constant development of bilateral ties.

The exhibition and related activities would help promote the exchanges and dialogues between cultural fields of the two nations, she said.

Westerwelle in his speech praised the friendly bilateral ties and the progress in cultural exchanges. He also expressed the hope that the two nations will further enhance cooperation to bring their ties to a new level.

The exhibition, which falls under the joint auspices of Chinese President Hu Jintao and German President Christian Wulff, will be on show in Beijing for a year.

The exhibition is the first international exhibition hosted at the newly refurbished National Museum of China in central Beijing, and also the biggest exhibition Germany ever held overseas.

It is also the first cooperation among Germany's three biggest museums -- the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and the Bayerische Staatsgemaldesammlungen Munich -- outside Europe.
