Heritage protection extremely urgent: Official

A Chinese cultural heritage official has said great efforts should be made to protect relics from China's development through improved awareness and advocacy.
Shan Jixiang, director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, says there is an extreme need for industrial heritage protection.
"Legions of industrial relics have been dismantled to give way to development projects due to the modernization drive across the country," Shan said. "Protection of industrial heritage has not received due attention as a result of the short history for development of modern industries in China."
Modern industries have played a crucial role in shaping the way of thinking of the Chinese, who have long been living in an agricultural civilization, he said.
He urged local officials to have a progressive vision in drafting out city planning to ameliorate the problem.
