Lufthansa will commence using the A321 from next year. This will be the world s first commercial passenger flight to use bio-fuel.
This eco-friendly aircraft will be launched in April 2011 and will service daily flights between Hamburg and Frankfurt. The A321 will be powered by an international aero engine and run on bio-fuel made of 50% hydrotreated vegetable oil, according to a report in eTravel Blackboard. The fuel, developed by Neste Oil from Finland, is said to neutralise carbon dioxide emissions by discharging the carbon dioxide it absorbs when it grows.
Lufthansa will monitor the sustainability of the fuel through their Burn Fair R&T project that is estimated to run for six months.
