India and Sri Lanka have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on international ferry services between the two countries.
The resumption of a ferry service was brought about by the demand for affordable transportation between India and Sri Lanka. According to a report in Travel Daily India, the service will run from Tuticorin to Colombo and Talaimannar to Rameswaram, offering cheap fares, quick passage and a 100-kilogrammes luggage allowance which is significantly more than the airlines permit. A joint committee is being held in Colombo between January 10-11 where national delegates will discuss the modalities of the service, that looks likely to take the shape of a public-private partnership.
