Guam organises relief aid for Japan

Guam has received confirmation from the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that Hawaii, Alaska, the US territories (including Guam) and the US West Coast are not expected to experience any harmful levels of radioactivity from the nuclear plant burst in Japan. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration s National Weather Forecast Office in Guam has also stated that current weather patterns will not bring air from the Japan region to Guam or other islands of Micronesia for at least a week and likely, a much longer period.

While Guam remains safe for travel, their concern for the people in Japan has mobilised several organisations to come together in relief efforts. The Hilton Guam Resort & Spa is organising a Hilton Benefit Concert in collaboration with the United Chinese Association, and the Japan Club of Guam continues to accept monetary donations for displaced individuals and families in Japan, with the GVB office in Tumon serving as a drop-off point for it.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army are also organising donation drives. For more information, please visit contact the Guam ARC office at 1(671)472-6217 or the Salvation Army at 477-9878.
