President Wang Rong attended the second China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week

From August 5th to August 8th, President Wang Rong attended the second China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the P. R. China, the Ministry of Education of the P. R. China and the Peoples Government of Gui Zhou Province. University presidents form ASEAN countries and 43 university presidents from China were present. Mr. Hao Ping, vice Minister of education, attended and presided over the opening ceremony.

The Cooperation Week consist of four activities and events including the China-ASEAN University Rectors Forum, a Seminar for China-ASEAN Higher Educational Administrators, a Youth Summer Camp, and a Seminar on China-ASEAN Environmental Education. The China-ASEAN University Rectors Forum mainly focuses on four aspects, namely, 1. Talent Cultivation, Students Mobility, Mutual Recognition of Credits, 2. Academic Exchange, Language Teaching Collaboration, 3. China-ASEAN University Students Sports Exchange; 4. Structuring China-ASEAN Intercollegiate Collaborations.

At the China-ASEAN University Rectors Forum, President Wang Rong delivered a keynote speech about Promoting talent cultivation, student mobility and credit transfer . He noted that some educational policies or regulations in some areas are not open and flexible enough, and this has become one of the barriers for international educational cooperation. The Chinese government and the governments of ASEAN countries should work together to further promote the mutual recognition of degrees and credit transfer. In addition, President Wang also called on the establishment of a China-ASEAN Educational Cooperation Organization. He said the mission of the Organization is to promote mutual recognition of degrees and credit transfers, to establish China-ASEAN education cooperation base universities, to create and perfect student exchange mechanisms, and to construct a joint course development platform. The ultimate goal is to improve the academic and teaching quality in this area, to strengthen competitiveness, and to promote the all-round educational cooperation between China and ASEAN countries.
The above speech has not only gotten positive responses among the university presidents who attended the forum but also attracted the ministers` attention. Journalist from Xinghua News Agency and CCTV-4 interviewed President Wang and quoted his views in their reports and TV programs.The cooperation week ended on August 7th, President Wang signed cooperative agreements with Universities in Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.
