With a contribution of 65% for polluted substances in the air, the auto exhaust emission has become the major culprit for air pollution in Dongguan according to the Environmental Protection Bureau of Dongguan.

The Bureau released the statement during an environmental protection function on Sunday in Guangcheng District, saying that the frequent hazes in Dongguan are linked to the sharp increase of automobile numbers and their exhaust emissions. The function was held to mark the World Health Day which has been dedicated to urbanization and health this year.
The number of vehicles in Dongguan has exceeded 1.26 million, ranking the second among cities in Guangdong Province. But only 83% of vehicles in Dongguan meet the state's environmental protection standards concerning automobile exhaust emissions, according to the Bureau.
"Sharp increase of vehicle numbers reflects the high degrees of urbanization, but is also a major factor contributing to air pollutions," the Bureau said.
To cope with pollution problems attributed to auto exhaust emission, the Bureau has implemented a program to assign environmental-friendly labels to vehicles in Dongguan.
The program will be initially carried out in the city's transit system, where buses with non-compliance of exhaust emissions standards will be required to installed emission control devices, and will be abandoned if the emission do not meet the provincial standard after the installation.
