Dongguan is set to implement traffic control restrictions with the aim of improving the air quality and reducing traffic congestion during the Guangzhou Asian Games.
Vehicles registered in Dongguan with license plates ending in odd numbers will only be allowed on the roads every other day. On days when odd numbered license plates are allowed, vehicles with license plates ending in even numbers are to be prohibited. Taxis, Ambulances, mail vans, and other public vehicles are exempt from the restriction.
All motor vehicles that fail to meet the European standard for exhaust emissions will be prohibited from entering Dongguan's downtown area for the duration of the Asian Games.
The Dongguan Government will lead by example by reducing their vehicle use by 30% and 50% if the API (air pollution index) is above 110.
Dongguan is the co-host city of the Games which will open in November. The weightlifting match of the Games will be held in Dongguan Sports Center.
