The underground sections of line R2, the intercity rail transit project in Dongguan, are expected to start construction by this December and will open for trial operation by the end of 2014, as Dongguan Daily reported Tuesday.
Among the four lines, the construction of Line R2 (running from north to southwest) is the first to start. Having a forecast investment of 18 billion yuan, it will run through 8 townships such as Shilong, Chashan, Dongcheng, Guancheng, Nancheng, Houjie, Humen and Chang'an. The line will also feature links to Shenzhen's intercity rail transit.
The first stage of Line R2 from Dongguan Railway Station to Dongguan Humen Terminal will be 37.74 km long, 89% of which will be underground. There will be 15 terminals in the first stage of Line R2, with the exception of the Humen terminal, 14 terminals are underground. Currently, Wenann RD Terminal and Dongcheng RD. Terminal are under construction.
According to the tender documentation for Line R2, its underground sections are expected to start construction by the end of 2010. By December of 2014, the Dongguan Railway Station--Dongguan Humen Terminal of Line R2 will be opened for non-passenger trial operation. By March 31 of 2015, it will be opened for trial operation with passengers.
The tender documentation also revealed that Line R2 will run at a speed up to 120 km/hr. It means that it will take only 40 minutes for people to get to Humen Terminal from the Dongguan Railway Station in Shilong Township. The running speed of Dongguan's rail transit are comparatively higher that most of the other cities' which are mostly 80 km/hr, said officers from the Dongguan Rail Transit Company.
Line R2 linking township clusters in Western Dongguan will promote the connection of the downtown area with Houjie, Humen and Chang'an. It will also support the regional cooperation of Dongguan with other cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Huizhou via joining with the rail transit junctions in the Pearl River Delta.
