From October 16 to 18, the international cooperative project The protection and sustainable development of living aquatic resources in Pearl River was held in SCAU. This project has been under the auspices of the European Union and hosted by Prof. Luo Shiming from Key Laboratory of Eco-agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture. Four experts from United Kingdom, Denmark and the Philippines paid a special trip to Guangzhou after completing their training in Vietnam. More than 30 teachers and graduate students from the College of Agriculture, College of Natural Resources and Environment, College of Forestry, College of Animal Science, College of Humanities and Law and College of Economic and Management attended the training sessions.
This European Union project will evaluate the Pearl River aquatic species diversity and ecosystem services and find out the impact of human activities. It will bring forward concrete measures of ecosystems conservation and sustainable development to aquatic biological resources from various ways of management, legislation, economy and public participation.
Dr. Sarah Pilgrim from the UK introduced the subject of the project as well as the objectives and requirements in various stages. Dr. Soren Lund from Denmark briefed the participatory concept, theory and practice in the application of research. Dr. Samantha Punch from the UK introduced the role of different gender, age and livelihood from the social and economic perspective, with particular emphasis on women and children in resource utilization and protection. Dr. Maan Bimbao from the Philippine Institute of Fisheries Resource Information introduced the issues on management of the project.
According to the project schedule, European experts will carry out the training on the evaluation methods of the ecosystem service function in March 2010.
